Olsen's Grain donates dog food to the K9 unit of the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office
and other K9 units in Yavapai and Coconino counties, YCSO spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn stated.
He quoted K9 team supervisor Sgt. Jeff Jaeger as saying the "very generous donation"
has continued for at least 10 years and costs about $30,000 annually.
Both D'Evelyn and Dan Olsen, secretary-treasurer of Olsen's Grain, used the word "absolutely"
to agree that the program provides positive reinforcement.
Like Pavlov's dogs, the K9 unit dogs get rewarded for doing their jobs but without associating a bell
with food.
"They do receive a reward," D'Evelyn said. Their handlers reward the dogs with a toy, not with food.
The food donation also amounts to positive reinforcement because the food quality is high, D'Evelyn said.
D'Evelyn's boss provided positive reinforcement by presenting the owners of Olsen's Grain
the Citizens of the Year award in January.
Sheriff Scott Mascher presented certificates and plaques to representatives of each of the
Olsen's Grain stores, according to a news release from YCSO.
Dan Olsen said he "humbly" accepted the award.
"My stand is we don't do it for rewards or accolades," Olsen said. "We do it for the community.
It is truly from the heart of the board of directors of the Olsen family."
Olsen said his father, John, and brother, Mike, founded the family business in 1979 by buying the
store in Chino Valley. Dan Olsen opened the Dewey store in 1982.
Olsen's also has locations in Prescott, Clarkdale, Flagstaff and Timberline.
